Drivers Ed Brake

Installing the BEST BRAKE installing the cable.

Now that you have both the passenger side and the drivers side installed, it is time to install the cable outer and inner, then test the system.

The outer cable and inner cable are supplied very long on purpose – this makes BEST BRAKE the best choice, BEST BRAKE fits all vehicles.

The outer cable fits between the drivers side floor / firewall mounted pulley.

And the pedal assembly on the passenger side.

The BEST BRAKE uses a smaller diameter outer cable than our competitors by design to make installation of the outer cable easier. Route the outer cable over the transmission hump / tunnel between the passenger and driver side of the vehicle. You may need to remove trim covers to find the best route for the cable. BEST BRAKE uses American made cable, providing greater strength and flexibility than the competitors that use Chinese products.

It is best to try and avoid very sharp corners with any cable installation, the sharper the corner the greater the wear on the inner and outer cable as the inner cable moves inside the outer cable.

Once you have the outer cable passed the transmission hump, insert the outer cable into one of the components, then mark the other side of the outer cable where it needs to be cut. It is best to cut the outer cable about an inch longer than what you think you need. Always easier to cut twice, rather than cutting too short.

You can cut the outer cable with any steel cutting saw.

Install the outer cable and verify that you have it the way you want it.

Once the outer cable is installed you can start to thread the inner cable through.

Start with the drivers side.

Thread the inner cable through the pedal hole followed by the floor / firewall mounted pulley.

Now push the cable through till it comes out on the instructors pedal side. This may need you to wiggle the cable a little, you can even pull the outer cable out from the pedal assembly to get the end of the inner cable out, before pushing it through the pedal assembly.

The new cable supplied is weld cut, meaning the end of the cable is welded together in the cutting process. If you experience the ends of the cable fraying, twist the fraying end till the individual strands are back in place, then tape the end to keep the strands together. Do not make the end so thick it will not pass through the outer cable or through the pulleys.

This is where the inner cable will come out of the pedal assembly.

From here pull the inner cable through all the way and proceed to thread it around the pulley.

To make this easier, press the pedal down, this will give you some extra working space.

If needed you can remove the nut and washer to give access to the groove of the pulley.

The end of the inner cable is secured to the break pedal arm using a custom locking block.

The grooves of this block must be under the block so that the inner cable lies in the groves as the block is tightened down. The cable is passed under the block a second time, then the block can be tightened down.

Like the outer cable, the inner cable is supplied very long. You can decide where to cut the cable should you decide to shorten the cable. It is best to tape the area you wish to cut with duct or electrical tape before cutting to prevent the ends fraying.

From here all that remains is for you to test the brake and the installation.

It is very important to understand that you are responsible for the installation, the safety of your vehicle and your occupants as well as other people and they property depend on it. You may have to defend your installation in a court of law if you do not install the brake system properly and if you fail to maintain it.

Cable, pulleys and pulley bolts must to replaced yearly.
